This session was developed specifically for USPHS attendees.
Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder has evolved drastically in the Federal Bureau of Prisons largely in part due to clinical and administrative efforts led by Pharmacists. This presentation will highlight the challenges faced of implementing treatment for opioid use disorder, but also proposed solutions that pharmacists can provide to expand access to care using MOUD. Although this presentation will come through the perspective of a correctional specific lens, lessons learned can be applied to any practice setting looking to expand access to care.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the progression of medications for opioid use disorder in the Federal Bureau of Prisons
Discuss the success of using pharmacists to expand access to MOUD for incarcerated people
Describe how the BOP navigated the certification process to create Opioid Treatment Programs at correctional institutions
